The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

From the Baccus 6mm web site:

I am certain that there's a lot of you out there who wonder just how all these little men are designed and produced.

In fact I know this because you keep on asking me about it at shows and by email and on the phone. No one can ever accuse me of being slow on the uptake, so I've decided to organise anf Open Day to allow people to come to visit the Baccus HQ and have a nosey round for themselves.

The next Open Day will be on:

Saturday 20th January 2007

I'm afraid that I have to limit numbers as the workshop isn't all that big. On each day there will be two sessions, one running from 10.00am. to 12.00-ish. and one from 2.00pm to 4.00-ish. I am organising a buffet lunch at the nearby pub, which for those of you not driving is one of Sheffield's top Real Ale venues. (There will be charge for the meal, price to be arranged.)

For those attending, you'll get to see the complete process of how we turn a featureless armature into a mighty 6mm warrior for your armies, which you'll see is quite a tortuous process. You will meet with Igor the caster - an experience given to very few, and of course you'll get the chance to ask all those questions beginning with with, 'How', Why', 'What' and especially 'When'.

And where would any guided tour or visit be without a final flurry of retail therapy, as you cannot leave the building before visiting the 'Gift Shoppe'....

Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and you can book by contacting me at baccus6@aol.com or by ringing me 0114 2724491

Travel Instructions can be downloaded if you >>>Click Here>>>

I can't guarantee you the best two hours of your life, but it may come pretty close....

Cheers

So Long, Saddam!

Since this is my site, I get to say pretty much whatever I want here. Right now, I'm going to ramble on a bit about the late dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein.

I am not going to spout off (much) about the current situation in Iraq. Whether or not President Bush did the right thing by invading Iraq when he did, whether or not he knew there weren't large WMD stockpiles there, etc., doesn't really matter anymore to me. The bottom line is that we (in the form of our best and bravest fighting men and women) are there. We now have a responsibility to the citizens of Iraq to ensure that they are, at a minimum, no worse off when we leave than when we set foot on their soil. I don't believe that we should pull our troops out until we can be certain we've done what we can. But once we've done that, and the Iraqis are ready to control their own country, I don't think we should hesitate to get out.

Saddam Hussein was a despicable man. He had members of his own family killed. He had political opponents killed. He killed those who opposed him on religious grounds. He lived in luxury while many of his citizens were hungry and ill. Getting him out of power in Iraq was the right thing to do. While I would hesitate to say that executions are always appropriate, in this case I believe the Iraqis did the right thing. A Saddam Hussein in prison could always be broken out and set free. A free Saddam Hussein could be a threat to the world, perhaps even a terrorist leader.

Was Saddam a real threat to the United States? Probably not. Was he a threat to his own people? You bet! Is the world, on balance, better off with him? I'd say so.

I will not miss Saddam Hussein. My only regret here is that we've had to risk the lives of thousands of American soldiers to remove from power a man whose own people should have risen up and taken out.

My thoughts, good wishes, and prayers go out to every soldier serving in Iraq right now. I can't imagine the hardships you are all enduring, the sacrifices you are making, the risks you have to accept each day, and losses you've suffered in the forms of your fellow soldiers. If I have a wish for the new year, it's that your mission will be accomplished and you'll ALL come home safe and sound. Whether you push papers in an office at the Pentagon or face fire on the streets of Baghdad, you're all heroes to me.

For readers of this web site, war is probably more often a game we play than a daily reality for us. In spite of that, I doubt any wargamer at this site would trivialize the very real and deep sacrifices made by those in our armed forces. In fact, I suspect that in many ways we appreciate those sacrifices in ways that non-gamers cannot.

Review: Stronghold 2

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Over Thanksgiving, I purchased Stronghold 2 for $19.99 from Office Max. I was in the mood for a real-time strategy game, something a little different than my usual sci-fi fare. Stronghold 2 certainly seemed to fit that bill. It featured medieval castles, catapults, trebuchets, archers, polemen, etc.

The graphics in the game are 3D and more than adequate to the task. It was very easy to tell units apart on-screen, buildings looked unique and recognizable, etc. Rotating the camera in the game proved to be rather difficult, so I rarely tried. It just wasn't worth the effort.

The sounds are also adequate and not overdone.

The controls are a bit strange. To select a unit, you left-click on it. To move it, you left-click where you want that unit to go. Most of the time, this works fine. Sometimes, however, this makes it difficult to select and move units that are located close together.

There appears to be a "tech tree" of sorts in the game, where you can initially make only spearmen and archers. Supposedly you can also make armored troops, swordsmen, and a variety of others. Unfortunately the manual doesn't explain this well and it's certainly not clear in playing. After playing several levels of the single-player campaign, I still can't make a mounted unit or a sword-swinging unit. I've no idea why or how. Worse, my AI opponents all seem to be able to produce these units in quantity, and their units seem to take 2-3x the damage mine do before dying.

In addition to the "invisible" tech tree, the game also suffers from a "wash, rinse, and repeat" mission design. That is, at the start of each mission, you begin with almost nothing. You have to scramble to gather resources, build defenses, and construct units to defend and/or attack. Meanwhile, the computer throws wolves (which eat archers and spearmen for breakfast), bandits (who can kill several of your units with one of theirs), enemy forces (which can kill several of your soldiers with one of theirs), time limits, and more at you. Once you've managed to beat the level, the cut scene explains that you've decided to move to another castle for the next mission (i.e., rinse away all your progress) where you start all over again (i.e., repeat).

Sometimes, the cut scenes make some very lame excuses for the "rinse" part. For example, after fighting my way through one map, my "character" and another decide that they need to use their enemy's castle because it's better located and will be easier to defend. Below is the castle they think will be easier to defend:

From the Consimpress web site for December 25, 2006:

As we prepare to enter 2007, we have made a change in our initial game line-up in order to solidify our first four game entries. In other news, we are pleased to welcome Neil Randall as developer for Ides of March, a John B. Firer game design.

Neil recently completed development work on GMT's Onward Christian Soldiers a Richard H. Berg game design. From the Fullmetal Alchemist TCG web site:

Sign up for a Sacrifice pre-release!
December 21, 2006. The holidays are a time for giving, and "give" can often be a synonym for "sacrifice." OK, that's a bit of a stretch, but you can still "give back" to your FMA community by getting your local store to sign up for a Sacrifice pre-release, which we've now made even easier than ever!

All you have to do is download this form and get your local retailer to fill it out, along with their payment, and they'll be fully registered to host a Sacrifice pre-release the weekend of Feb. 9-11, 2007. That's right, there's only one form from now on! We've eliminated the "application, then order form" confusion by combining our application and order form into one simple form!

But that's not all we've added to make your Sacrifice pre-release a terrific event! In addition to the normal pre-release sealed deck option (1 box of A Hero's Passing starter decks and 3 boxes of Sacrifice boosters per 8 players), you can also sign up for a booster-draft pre-release, which includes 4 boxes of Sacrifice boosters per 8 players, enough for deckbuilding and prize support. We experimented with the booster-draft format in select venues for the Seven Deadly Sins pre-release, and the stores that used this format universally agreed it was great! And, as with the SDS pre-releases, you'll receive one Transmutation binder for each 8-person pack you order and can order more at a special reduced price.

The deadline for ordering a Sacrifice pre-release is Tuesday, January 9. So spread the holiday cheer and register today!
