Is it better to Grind XP or Quest in WoW?

A question I often see asked in chat channels is whether it's better to focus on completing quests or kill monsters if you are trying to gain levels and experience points (XP). In this case, the common answer is generally the right one, which is that questing will probably yield more XP than simple farming of mobs. However, that's a rather simplistic answer to a more complicated question.

As with many of these kinds of recurring questions, the correct and complete answer is that it depends on several factors.

One of the most important factors to consider is the type of quests you're working on and the level those quests are designed for. For instance, if you are a level 20 character working on a quest designed for level 10 characters, you might be wasting your time. The amount of XP you're going to gain for completing that quest is going to be relatively low. If that quest involves killing lots of level 10-11 mobs, you're not going to be getting any XP for those either. So unless the quest involves a reward you particularly want (like lots of gold) or you are just having fun with it, you're probably wasting your time.

Similarly, even if the quest is of a level that provides sufficient reward, if it's the sort of quest that has you going lots of traveling and very little fighting, it's probably not the best use of your time.

To determine whether questing or farming (where by "farming" I mean just staying in an area killing all the monsters you can) is a better option for you, you can do a simple estimation in your head. Estimate how long the quest will take to complete. Let's say it's one hour, and it's a quest where there is little or no killing involved. After looking on sites like thottbot.com or allakhazam.com, you learn that this quest usually rewards 8000 XP when complete. That means you're going to be earning around 8000 XP in an hour, or about 133 XP per minute.

Suppose that your alternative is to stay in an area and farm a particular kind of monster. If you're getting 200 XP from each kill and you can kill one about every 30 seconds, you're earning 400XP per minute. That means you'd earn 3x the XP farming that you would completing the quest. Thus, in that example, you're better off farming.

But the numbers can work the other way, too. Suppose your quest has a reward of 5000XP and requires you to collect a number of items that drop off a certain mob. After killing a few, you estimate that 1 in 10 mobs drops the item, and you're getting 150XP per mob. You can kill the mob about every 45 seconds, resulting in around 80 kills in an hour, for a total of 12,000 XP (150x80=12000). Thus, completing this quest would earn you around 17000XP in an hour, estimated. You're better off in this case doing the quest since you will get XP from completing it, in addition to the XP from the mobs.

Fortunately, it's not necessary to do all this math yourself. There is an add-on called Titan Panel which can be configured to display your current "XP per Hour" and "Time to Level". Using this tool, you can gauge how quickly you're REALLY earning XP and how quickly you can expect to reach your next level. I found that the Titan Panel interface started to annoy me after a while, but it did help me to get a sort of "gut feel" for whether I was better off doing one thing than another.

For me personally, I tend to alternate between questing and farming depending on my mood. If I want to scare up a bunch of money and XP, I tend to go farming mobs somewhere I feel relatively safe. If I'm more interested in traveling or seeing some places I haven't seen before (or haven't seen in a while) I'll tend to quest. This openendedness is one of the nicer things about WoW.

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

In World of Warcraft, a character "rests" when it spends time in a city or inn. If the character rests long enough, it begins to accumulate a bonus which doubles the amount of experience (XP) it earns per kill. You can tell if you're rested by looking at your XP "meter" at the bottom of the screen. If it's purple, you're not rested. If it's blue, you are. Just "how" rested you are is indicated by the presence of a small "tick-mark" or "slider" on top of the XP bar. If you don't see that tick-mark, you're rested at least until you complete the current level you're working on. If you do see the tick-mark, you're rested until your current XP reaches that mark, at which time you'll cease being rested.

I've heard players ask if it's better to log out in a place where you are resting or not. The answer generally comes back as "no, it's not worth it" but that's really NOT the correct answer. The correct answer is, "It depends on how frequently you play that character." Let me explain.

Let's say that you play WoW every single day without fail, for several hours per day, and always log off in a place where you're gaining rest. Odds are that you won't accumulate that much rest during the few hours per day that you're not playing, so the benefit you get from being rested is probably minimal compared to the time it takes you to get from the place of rest to the place you enjoy questing or farming or PVPing. For a person who plays a single character on a very regular basis for long periods of time, resting is probably more trouble than it's worth. So in that sense, the common answer is the correct one.

On the other hand, let's imagine that you're more like me. I play WoW a few times a week at most, with long breaks in between where my job and personal life prevent me from playing as much as I might like. Sometimes I travel for vacation or business, and I can't play WoW for several days at a stretch. In those situations, if I log out in a city or inn, my character gains "rest" even though I am not playing. When I come back a few days later, the character may have accumulated enough rest so that it can complete an entire level earning double XP. Was it worth it for me to rest? You bet! It will take me half the time to gain my next level because I took a moment to log out in a place of rest. So, for me personally, it's very worthwhile to rest my characters. Also, since I have more than one character, I always make sure to log the alternate characters out in a place of rest. That way they, too, accumulate entire levels worth of "rest". So in this case, the common answer of "rest isn't worth it" isn't true. Because I am not in-game for long-ish periods of time, my characters accumulate enough rest that when I AM in the game I can level much faster than I would otherwise.

How do you know when you're resting in WoW? Look at your character's portrait in the upper left corner. If you can see your level number inside the little circle at the bottom left of the portrait, then you are NOT resting where you are. If you see "Zzz" instead of your level number inside that circle, then you ARE resting and accumulating "double XP" time. Generally speaking, you will "rest" inside of the major cities like Stormwind, Ironforge, and the like. You will also rest in certain inns and locations outside major cities, but you won't know for sure unless you check your level indicator and note that it is filled with Z's.

Is Blizzard Combating "Farming" in WoW?

Consider the following to be anecdotal experience only, and in no way a scientific or careful analysis of in-game circumstances. I might be reading something into a series of coincidences here, but I'm starting to think not.

Over the weekend, I was reading several "how to make gold in WoW" guides to see what I could learn from them. One guide suggested going to the Scarlet Monastery instance(s) and cleaning them out for fun and profit with a higher-level character. Since I hadn't been to the Scarlet Monastery, I thought I might as well have a look.

I went into the Monastery, which is filled with NPCs and beasts of level 39 or less. Being a level 54 at the time, I had no problem dispatching most of these as long as I was careful not to take on too many at one time. In an hour or so, I'd completely cleared out most of the Library section of the instance. Since the character I was using was a Hunter, I was able to turn on the "Track Humanoids" feature and see where all the humans in the level were located. I was also able to determine that while there were some NPCs patrolling in the Monastery, their patrol routes were relatively short, typically just part of a long hallway.

While fighting a particularly difficult mob, three more wandered into the room with me and began attacking. Since I was already weakened some by fighting the current mob, the additional 3 were able to finish me off without a lot of trouble. I noticed that as soon as they killed me, they appeared to wander off to some distant part of the level individually (that is, each one went to a different part of the level a long way from where they'd killed me). It seemed odd at the time, but I figured maybe I just failed to notice a roving mob.

Later, I was in the Western Plaguelands trying to level up my character. Since I was alone with my pet, I was sticking to areas where the mobs were within my "safe tolerance" level. I would fire a bullet into one of the skeletal warriors or slavering zombies and pull them to me, then take them out with my pet and my sword. After clearing out the cemetary area once, I went to a tougher area and killed some more-difficult zombies while waiting on the graveyard to respawn. Eventually it did, and I went back there. I started systematically killing off the mobs there, when suddenly 3 of them ran in from the distance, attacked me, killed me, then ran off in separate directions. These were mobs that were "stationed" at distant parts of the graveyard, and ran past several much closer mobs to get to me. It's not as though these mobs had been summoned or called to the one I was attacking. If they had been, I would have expected the much-closer mobs to have been the ones to swam in. No, these mobs came from 3 diverse, distant locations directly to my spot to attack me, then went back there. At this point, I began to wonder if a GM was trying to tell me something.

Finally, I was in the ape cave in the Un'Goro Crater, trying again to level up. I had been, once more, systematically trying to wipe out the apes as I went. After killing maybe a dozen or so, the same thing happened. Three apes came in from a distant part of the cave, formed a group, and attacked me, killing me in the process. When I turned into a ghost, I followed them and saw that they came from distant parts of the cave. They had been too far away to have been called in for help if/when the ape I was fighting had called them. So again, I'm wondering if the GMs were behind this.

As I said at the outset, these are simply 3 anecdotal stories. Maybe it was coincidental. Maybe I missed some cue like the mob calling out for help and these 3 happened to respond. But the observations do seem to fit a pattern. In each case, I was soloing my way through an area, wiping out the mobs as I went. And in each case, 3 other mobs from distant parts of that area came running in from wherever they were, converged on me, attacked, and went back where they came from.

I suspect that this may be a bit of code or a specific GM action designed to combat farming of mobs in a given area. I can understand that they might want to do this both to combat the "Asian gold farmer" as well as to ensure that there are enough mobs in a given area to allow all players the chance to successfully quest in that area. For instance, the ape cave in Un'Goro Crater is used in a couple of quests. My clearing out of the ape population in that cave might have made completion of some of the ape-related quests in Un'Goro difficult for another player. Perhaps what happened to me was Blizzard's way of ensuring that there are enough apes in the cave to allow quests to be completed.

On the other hand, that doesn't explain the Scarlet Monastery example. In an instanced situation like that, I could single-handedly kill the entire population of the instance without harming any other player's ability to do so, since each player would be in his or her own instance with his or her own set of mobs to deal with. That brings me back to the anti-farming thought.

But that doesn't quite make sense to me either. If I was trying to gather up enough resources (such as the hides from the apes) to complete a leatherworking project, farming is the smartest and most efficient way to do that. I'd want to go somewhere like the cave, kill everything I could, skin it (which I was doing), and move on. When I had "enough" of the resource, I could move on to leatherworking and producing the items. Wandering around semi-randomly and waiting to collect enough of the same item would not be expected or reasonable behavior.

So I don't know what to think, but I'm going to keep watching what happens as I go about my gaming...

The fun guys at Red Shirt Games (and I can say this because I've gamed with them almost annually at Origins for 5-10 years) have released several news items lately.

They've added D12 Fantasy Counters and Unit Record Sheets to the Downloads page on their site.

They're moving ahead with their agenda for 2007 and are discussing their plans with fans on their Message Board.

Their Origins games were well-attended (I can vouch for that), and their new books D12 Fantasy Dwarves and Dark Elves and D12 Fantasy Demons and Dragons were well received. Red Shirt games is now offering PDF books in addition to hardcopy.

Combat Zone Chronicles has posted the rules for a tongue-in-cheek (I think) miniatures-based wargame called "Get That Crate". It's about a battle over scale-creep in miniatures-based gaming. Players take on the role of fantasy miniatures gamers, historical miniatures gamers, the IP Police,and/or Conventioneers. All of them are searching for an oversized crate containing the mythical "master" of a 25mm miniature which is the focus of combat. For more information and complete rules, click here.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BattleCorps.com Addresses Pre-order Concerns

Everett, WA, July 27, 2007—BattleCorps.com is well aware of the concerns of customers over pre-orders from the BattleCorps BattleShop, specifically over two products that have not shipped, despite their pre-order status for long months.

“The transition of the Classic BattleTech license to InMediaRes Productions LLC. (the parent company of BattleCorps.com) has not been without problems,” said David M. Stansel-Garner, Materials and Operations Manager for BattleCorps.com (and its sister company, Catalyst Game Labs). “One of the most problematic issues was the delay of printed product, some of which were already at the printers before the transition began, hence why they went on pre-order sale. While we are in the final stages of resolving such delays—with the release of almost half a dozen Classic BattleTech products in August—we still need to address the pre-orders that occurred during this time. We want to make sure that those who pre-ordered know that despite these extenuating circumstances, we appreciate their business and hope to continue to see such business in the future.”

Anyone that pre-ordered either the Classic BattleTech TechManual print book or the Warriors: BattleCorps Anthologies Vol. 1 print novel before July 1st, 2007 will be credited $5.00 on their BattleCorps BattleShop account, which can be used towards the purchase of any product available through the BattleCorps BattleShop.

For questions or comments or other ordering concerns, please contact quartermaster@battlecorps.com.
