PINEBOX, Texas — RPG publisher 12 to Midnight is launching a monthlong charity initiative called the Midnight Charity Project. This year the initiative, which runs from midnight December 1 to midnight December 31, will raise money for the Autism Research Institute

12 to Midnight is offering several ways for gamers to participate. First, they can bid in an online auction to win a guest role as an NPC in the upcoming college-horror RPG campaign book, “ETU: Degrees of Horror.” You can also bid on an official City of Pinebox death certificate or an autographed copy of 12 to Midnight’s adventure “Bloodlines.” Finally, when you purchase products from Midnight Cellar, 12 to Midnight’s store, the company will donate 100% of the purchase price of Last Rites of the Black Guard, Brainwashed and Skinwalker, as well as 20% of the proceeds from all other titles, to the Autism Research Institute.

Anyone who participates in the charity project is invited to further help raise awareness by using the html or BB-code snippets found on the Midnight Charity Project home page. Also, throughout the month of December, 12 to Midnight will post articles about autism at 12tomidnight.com.

Other RPG publishers, podcasters, bloggers and everyday gamers are invited to participate in the Midnight Charity Project and help grow it into a hobby-wide, focused campaign. If you would like to donate merchandise, airtime, space on your blog, banner ads or anything else, please send an e-mail to mcp at 12tomidnight.com.

For more information on the Midnight Charity Project, including links to auctions, visit the Midnight Charity Project home page.

Why So Much Miniatures and RPG News?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

The following article was imported from our old content management system on 08/10/2008. It may contain missing links and missing images which we do not plan to go back and correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I've been asked by readers why this site is so heavily laden with articles about RPGs and miniatures. I'm sure some of you have wondered if those are my gaming interests and if that's why the coverage of other areas, such as wargames, is relatively light. The truth, sadly, isn't even as interesting as that.

To get the news I publish here, I rely on two sources: Google Alerts and manufacturers' web sites. Google Alerts sends me an email any time it detects news about wargames or board games. I also use another tool to scan about 400-500 game-related sites to find anything new, then filter manually through all that "potential news" to find what might be of interest to you. Because this is a hobby and not a full-time job, I can't spend lots of time each day scouring other offline sources, making calls, etc. Maybe someday the site will take off to a point where I can, but so far it hasn't.

I personally enjoy most facets of gaming. I like a good wargame. I like a good miniatures game. I like board games, card games, PC strategy games, and RPGs. Bottom line, I like a good game and I'm not too particular what "kind" of game it is. This site's "shotgun" coverage is a reflection of that wide-ranging interest. I don't intentionally sleight any facet of gaming here. Nor do I intentionally leave off any particular manufacturer. I try to treat the little "one-person shop" as well as the industry leaders in terms of coverage. Actually, I'll probably bend over backwards for the little guy, to help them make it big if I can.

But the sad truth, from my perspective on this side of the computer screen, is that the most active parts of the hobby gaming industry right now seem to be RPGs and miniatures. If I scan the Internet every day, I am almost always guaranteed to find that some foundry has released a new miniature, and some RPG publisher has put out a new supplement or title. It's rare, by comparison, that the wargame publishers put out anything new. But if they do, and I find out about it, I definitely cover it. I'm not saying that I think other parts of the industry are dying, or anything of the sort. I think it's simply that the amount of work required to produce a totally new tabletop wargame (with maps, counters, rules, etc.) is probably substantially more than to produce (for example) an RPG map in PDF form or a new miniature. I also think there are many more businesses actively producing miniatures and RPG items right now than wargames. As a result, we should expect to see (and do) more RPG and miniature releases than new wargame releases. Since I cover a sort of "survey" of the industry, you should expect to see (and do) more RPG and miniatures coverage here than wargame coverage... not because of any bias on my part.

Simmons Games is offering King of Siam and Napoleon's Triumph, as described below:

King of Siam and Napoleon’s Triumph. To celebrate the continuing partnership of Simmons Games and Histogame, a special promotional bundle is now available: King of Siam and Napoleon’s Triumph can be bought together for a price of $74.95. This amounts to over 20% off the regular price of the two games bought separately!

King of Siam
In partnership with its publisher, Histogame Simmons Games is delighted to offer Histogame’s King of Siam. King of Siam is based on the struggle for power in Siam in the late nineteenth century. It is is a game for two, three or four players. In a political power struggle, the players try to maneuver one of the three contending factions (the Malay, Lao, and Rama) into power while simulataneously gaining influence over that faction. The game is even easier to learn than Friedrich, and plays fast: a typical game will be completed in an hour. After the initial set-up, there is no chance in King of Siam: each player has the same set of eight action cards and must out-think his opponents to seize the prize. Game play is subtle and rewards indirection and thinking ahead. Anyone who enjoys strategy games can enjoy King of Siam.

From the Press Release on Twilight Creations' web site:

For Immediate Release: Twilight Creations, Cold Spring, KY, is pleased to announce that as of October 31st, the Zombies!!! base game (TLC 2010) has sold over 100,000 copies. since its premier in October of 2001. This figure does not include the various translated versions of Zombies!!! or it’s multitude of expansions.

The Zombies!!! board game was designed by Todd Breitenstein as an employee of Journeyman Press, a division of the United States Playing Card Co. After Journeyman Press was dissolved in late 2001, Twilight Creations was founded and the Zombies!!! line was able to continue.

Since the inception of this simple but thematically intense board game, there have been six expansions released and another is currently in the design process. Zombies!!! has also been released in German, Spanish, French and Italian.

“Zombies!!! sales have continued to increase year after year with no evidence of slowing down, “ says Kerry Breitenstein, VP of Twilight Creations. “We have a hard time keeping the game in stock, with some print runs selling out in less than 3 months.”

Fans of the game have included many well known figures including Max Brooks, Wil Wheaton, special effects master Greg Nicotero, former NFL player Doug Brzezinski, heavy metal band Black Lung and many others.

As a thank you for the support of the fans, Twilight Creations will be launching “The Twelve Months of Zombies” contest. On the 1st of each month in 2008, a new contest will be announced and the winner will receive a copy of the Zombies!!! base game and all of the expansions. The winners will also have the opportunity to design a card for an upcoming Zombies!!! expansion.

Also in 2008, along with a carnival expansion for Zombies!!!, Twilight Creations will be releasing Humans!!! This game will be similar to the Zombies!!! game except the players are the zombies trying to infect as many people as possible. There will be scenarios released with the game in which both the Humans!!! and Zombies!!! games can be played together.

As the owner of one of those 100,000 copies, I would like to congratulate Twilight Creations on its success with Zombies!!! and thank them for producing a fun, replayable Zombie-themed board game.

Hampstead, NC, 06 November, 2007
When the alien armadas descend from the skies above there will be two types of Earthlings facing them. The first type will be those unable to fight the invaders due to their lack of interstellar combat knowledge. They will be captured en masse and experience a lifetime of probing. The aliens won't even buy them dinner, nor cuddle afterwards. The second type will know the fine art of galactic starship combat thanks to the countless hours they spent playing Eat Electric Death!. This group will become heroes to the human race, and will have really big statues made of them. We're talking huge.

For everyone looking to not be probed, Shrapnel Games is proud to announce that Digital Eel's board game, Eat Electric Death!, is currently at the printers and we are accepting pre-orders on this thrilling title! From now December 31st, Eat Electric Death! can be pre-ordered for only $32.95 direct from Shrapnel Games. Pre-ordering guarantees that you will be one of the first Earthicans to get the game once it arrives from the printer. And no, you don't have to wait for another 499 folks to also pre-order. Current shipping ETA is early first quarter 2008.

Eat Electric Death! is a tactical starship combat game set in the Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space computer game universe. Designed by the award-winning developer behind the computer game, Digital Eel, no knowledge of the digital game is necessary to enjoy the cardboard game. What is necessary is an appreciation of fast-moving, action packed gameplay that will leave a grin plastered on your face all night long.

Two players (although solo and group play can also work) command the starships of seven races from Weird Worlds in over twenty-five scenarios. Start off small with a furious dogfight, or jump right into the stuff space operas are made of with a daring running battle amongst asteroids to protect the Zorg ambassador. Secret weapon cards shake up tactics, and make every replay unique. Most scenarios take under thirty minutes to game, and even the largest won't take longer than an hour, making Eat Electric Death! the perfect space game for today's on-the-go gamer.

Eat Electric Death! is easy to learn and to teach. Combat is fast and brutal. Decide what weapon or weapons you're firing, roll a die, and for each hit the targeted ship blindly draws one damage counter from a pool. A wide variety of results that includes system damage and even insta-kill reactor breaches is possible, all without needing to consult complex charts. Tracking damage is just as easy as dealing it! Every capital ship in the game has a unique data card that allows players easy bookkeeping without bogging down play.

During playtesting not only did Shrapnel employ our usual great band of testers, but we scoured the universe looking for the opinions of those that know space best. What did the professionals have to say about Eat Electric Death!?

"Aye, she's a finely engineered box of fun that keen provide action a'plenty. And ye cannat go wrong wit a game that features wormholes innit." -- M.S.

"Impressive, most impressive. I sense a great disturbance in my weekends when this is released." -- D.V.

"What gorgeous counters, and sweatily hot gameplay. I intend to take this home and play it hard, hard just the dirty, dirty game it is…" -- Z.B.

Learn more about Eat Electric Death! and check out what we think is the best looking art for a sci-fi board game on the market by warping your browser to:

www.gamersfront.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16181&cat=256&page=

Remember, the special pre-order price is only good through the end of the year. If you only pre-order one game this year that ensures you won't be probed by aliens, be sure it's Eat Electric Death!.

Shrapnel Games would also like to invite you to show the world that you don't want to end up naked on a cold metal table. When Digital Eel unveiled the box art we had to have it on our desktops, and thought gamers everywhere would also appreciate it. Featuring an Urluquai fighter squadron hurling electric death and boasting a cool retro- pulp flair, the cover art is available as a desktop wallpaper. Show your office, school, or public library the glory that is Eat Electric Death!. We even have one perfect for your iPhone! You can download the wallpaper from here:

From the good folks at Matrix Games comes the following news:

Chat online with the game design legend himself, Dan Verssen!

Matrix Games and Dan Verssen Games (www.dvg.com) are excited to announce that they will be hosting a live chat event with none other than game design legend Dan Verssen on Thursday, November 15th at 9 PM EST. Now fans of both Dan Verssen’s board games and PC games will have a chance to fire away at him and ask a wide range of questions. The chat will be hosted at the Matrix Games Live Chat area on the Matrix Games website.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “It’s always nice to have fans and designers meet up online to discuss a variety of different topics. With the recent release of Hornet Leader PC, I’m sure there will be no shortage of things to talk about!”

Dan Verssen of Dan Verssen Games added “I’m excited to hear what the communities from both the board and PC game side of things have to say. I hope fans of Hornet Leader PC can get exposed to my board game design work and vice versa for my tabletop fans.”

This live chat event comes in fast and furious right on the “6 o’clock” of Dan Verssen’s latest release, Hornet Leader PC, which has captivated both fans of the original Hornet Leader board game and tactical air combat fans alike. To further feed the excitement surrounding Hornet Leader PC, Matrix Games has also released a playable demo for Hornet pilots who have yet to take to the skies.

In Hornet Leader PC, players can command a squadron of the U.S. Navy’s elite F/A-18 Hornet Strike Fighters! You select the pilots and arm the aircraft based on real-world mission briefings. Once you reach your objective, you evaluate threats, and do what needs to be done to destroy the target!

Each pilot has his own set of unique skills and abilities. With each mission, a pilot’s skills increase, but so does his fatigue level. You must decide how hard to push your men as one of the many decisions that go into every mission.

Get more information on Hornet Leader PC from its official Matrix Games webpage and more information on Dan Verssen’s great line of tabletop products from his official website. And be sure to head over the Matrix Games Live Chat area on Thursday, November 15th at 9 PM EST!

From the John Jenkins Designs web site comes the following announcement:

The Battle on Snowshoes Now Available!

On March 14th 1758 a small battle took place in the wilderness of north America.

The total number on both sides did not exceed 500 men. These men on the British side were primarily native born settlers from New England led by Robert Rogers, and on the French side native born Canadians and their native Indian allies of New France, led by the French partisan Langy. This battle did not end in a draw. Despite the success of an initial ambush by Rogers and his rangers, the battle was to swing the way of the numerically superior French force. It was to be a clear cut victory for the French and Indians and resulted in the almost total annihilation of the best of the newly formed English Rangers. Only darkness was to save Rogers and the remnants of his force. This battle has become known as “The Battle On Snowshoes”

From Catalyst Game Labs' Classic Battletech site comes the following news:

Catalyst Game Labs is pleased to announce Technical Readout: 3039 (see latest BattleBlog for additional information concerning the development of this exciting companion Technical Readout to the Introductory Box Set).

The Succession Wars

In 2781 the Star League was officially abandoned, ending a two hundred year-long Golden Age. In 2785 the Successor Lords launched a series of massive conflicts that would rage for centuries and become known as The Succession Wars. Such endless warfare has taken its toll and by the Fourth Succession War of 3028, the technology employed on the battlefields is a mere shadow of the height of the Star League. However, the discovery of the Helm Memory Core is beginning to unlock such sought-after secrets, with new BattleMechs and experimental technologies starting to make a debut for the first time in centuries.

Classic BattleTech Technical Readout: 3039 is the perfect “first Technical Readout” companion to the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set. Combining the ’Mechs, vehicles and aerospace fighters previously found in Technical Readout: 3025, Revised and Technical Readout: 3026, Revised, this volume features some of the most common units of the Succession Wars. Each machine is illustrated in detail, accompanied by a description of its history, capabilities, game stats, along with their most famous pilots.
