Along with looking at referral statistics for the site, I wanted to look at hit counts as well. The numbers look very encouraging and point to the continued survival of Gamer Hotsheet as a site. Here's a chart showing all the page requests (hits) we've gotten since we began gathering statistics in September 2006:
As you can see, we're seeing around 65,000 hits per month the last couple of months. That works out to around 2,166 page requests per day (assuming a 30-day month). That's a very respectable amount of traffic.
I've always known that gamers are generally smarter folks than average, so it doesn't surprise me that most of you don't appear to be running JavaScript on your web browsers (probably due to the many security concerns this can raise). As a webmaster, though, that's a bit of a bummer for me because the Alexa statistics tracking software, the StatCounter statistics software, the Google AdSense ads, and in fact parts of this site itself, rely on JavaScript for their operation. As a result of the disabling of JavaScript in your browsers, I see statistics discrepancies like this...
For May 2007, my web server logged 63,111 page requests at Gamer Hotsheet. StatCounter logged a total of 4,016. That means approximately 94% of the hits StatCounter should be telling me about are not counted. That severely impairs my ability to tell things like how many repeat visitors there are, how long they spent here, etc. Similarly, Google AdSense stats tell me that there were only 3,555 page impressions in May. There were only 13 clicks from those impressions, and a total of $2.00 in revenue generated. In fact, the site has generated $18.39 in AdSense revenue (total) since January 1, 2007. So if you have impressions of me sitting here getting lots of money and free games, I can tell you that's not in fact happening.
Fortunately, my costs for the site are still pretty low. They work out to around $5 a month. But what that means financially is that I'm taking in about $3 a month and putting out $5, leaving the site in the red. Since I make a decent living as a Windows Administrator, that's something I can afford. But when you count the time investment, which is significant and takes me away from gaming, it tips the balance against the site. That's one reason I've stopped doing the daily updates I did back at the site's inception. That's one way I can balance the "cost" of keeping the site going against the revenue.
The point of this diatribe is simple. If you've disabled JavaScript and AdSense in your browser, I'd like you to reconsider enabling it, at least when you visit this site. Perhaps doing this will allow you to see an ad that interests you. Perhaps not. Even if you ignore the ads, displaying them WILL help me in raising the hit counts Google sees, which may help GH get "better paying" ads. Note that Google AdSense rules prohibit me from suggesting or asking you to click on the ads, and I would like to make it perfectly clear that I am NOT suggesting that. All I am suggesting is that you re-enable the display of the ads if you have it disabled. What you do after that is no business of mine.
